About Blogging
I've wanted to blog for a while, but it wasn't until this class that I actually started. I like it, and I want to continue blogging into the future. For me, blogging is an outlet for my ideas. I can express my ideas to other people in a way that allows them to respond. I'm happy I've had the opportunity to blog about my life and will continue doing so. I plan to keep writing stories and posting them on my blog.

World Belly Dance Day!
I had a blast this weekend with World Belly Dance Day! 12 Houses dancers, as well as many other local dancers, had the opportunity to welcome Saroya of Atlanta to teach workshops last Saturday and Sunday.
Friday night, we had a Hafla, which is a party. We had a costume exchange (I gotta skirt!) and watched dancers do past and current routines. It was fun to see the other dancers show off. There was also a Henna artist who gave me a rat on each hand. It was a fun night.
Saturday was our busy day. In the morning, we flash mobbed a belly dance routine at the CanadInn, which is called "Shimmy Mob" and raises money for CVIC. After that, I had workshops for a few hours with Saroya, Intro to Turkish Style and Zills (finger cymbals). Then, I ended up going to eat with my family before heading home to grab my stuff and get ready for the show.
The show was so much fun, local dancers showed their talents at the Firehall Theater. It was fun to see so many dancers on one stage. The 12 houses dance class, which I am apart of, did the class routine. At the end, we shimmy mobbed again before going home.
Sunday morning was the last workshop, Flashcard choreography I was sore from doing workshops and tired because I didn't get much sleep, but it was still fun. I said my goodbyes to my dance sisters before going home to rest
I love dance. It's my escape. I meet so many amazing people doing this, I was very happy to see them again this last weekend. I can't wait until the next one! (and Zombiefest!)

Remembered Conversation?
I assume that this post is supposed to be about a conversation that I remembered somewhere, so let's go with that.
I work at a place where I hear hundreds of different conversation snippets every day. I hear arguments, general awkward small talk, and random conversations that sometimes seem inappropriate (we get a lot of teenagers.) I remember one snippet between a coworker and an woman who was irate over the fact that we didn't have "her soup"
Crazy Lady: Well, where is it?
Worker: We don't stock everything everynight...
Crazy Lady: Where the hell is it?!?
I walked away before the shit hit the fan, so I didn't get to hear the rest.
I've run into this kind of customer before. They think that we can magically make all their products appear on the shelves every night when we can't. It makes me sick.
I wonder how people can be so rude for no good reason. I see so many assholes everyday who push their way through the aisles (Canadians...). It's because of Walmart's reputation. You wouldn't see this scene in Target, which does upset me.
I really shouldn't talk about work anymore, I'm not really supposed to anyway.

Story Sketch
I heard on my favorite radio show, The Morning Playhouse with Zero, Rat and Maggie, about a thing called "Missed Connections" on Craigslist.
It's basically a place where people, usually guys, post descriptions of people, usually women, that they saw in public in an attempt to "hook up". It's mostly creepy.
Example at an Arbys;
"You waited on me tonight in drive thru. Things were taking a while. Gave me time to admire how pretty you are! I couldn't help myself, I also noticed you have a really nice butt! I believe the name on your name tag said Karisann...although I may be wrong. I was driving an older blue ford truck. If I were your boyfriend I would want to indulge and kiss every inch of you from head to the tip of your toes as often as I could. With any luck, or call it fate, I will come to know you!"
Ick, but it gave me an idea for a story, a less creepy story anyway.
A guy named Derek moves into town and moves next door to Sadie, who works at Bary's (see, I changed it!) and hates her job. Everyday for a month, Derek watches Sadie walk from her house and down the street to work and, one day, decides to give her a ride. They talk in the car and soon become close friends. At school, pressure from Derek's friends and pressure from Sadie's friends ultimately leads them to start dating. Then, they are nominated from prom king and queen. Derek's ex, Miranda, becomes jealous of the two and plans on destroying everyone's good time because she's like that. She plans on releasing wild, ravenous rats into the school gymnasium, sealing everyone inside. Just before her plan activates, she is ratted (non-intentional pun) out by her closest friend, Daisy, who is Derek's younger sister. Miranda is hauled off to Juvie (?) while Derek and Miranda become prom royalty.

The True Story
When I tell people the story of my parents, they don't believe me. Take, for example, in 8th grade when I tried to explain my story to my friends. The class clown (idiot) kept denying everything I said, even though it's truth. My parent's story is incredible, it reminds me of the movie "Forrest Gump" in it's depth. I think, for convenience, I'll start at the beginning.
My father was born in Falkirk, Scotland on June 29th, 1966. My dad's parents moved the family to New Zealand, where my dad grew up until he enlisted in the Army. My dad used to tell me many stories about growing up in New Zealand with his brother, Brian, and his sister, Liz. My favorite story is when my dad and Brian were playing war with metal darts and hiding behind mattresses. One thing led to another, and Brian got a dart right in the side of his neck. That was only one of many hospital trips that my dad had caused while growing up. Another time, when he was learning to drive, he drove my grandpa's car into the ocean off a pier. I never had the chance to see my grandparents before they both died, I wish I had. My dad says that I'm like my grandma, who used to throw playing cards into the fireplace if she didn't win. I guess I'm kind of like that too.
My dad enlisted in the Army when he was nineteen years old. He trained for a few years, going through a brutal boot camp and training in the jungles of New Guinea. He also fought in a conflict in Haiti, but he never talks about that. Eventually, his training brought him to Operation Deep Freeze, which was a mission to help scientists who were freezing seeds at Mc Murdo Station, Antarctica for storage. Basically, my dad went down there to help with supplies and other things. And this, of all places in the world, is where he met my mother.
My mother was born in Thief River Fall, Minnesota. She grew up in the country outside Holt, Minnesota and went to New Folden, School (MCC). She was a nerd, she even admits that to me now. She read a lot of books and didn't participate in any sports in high school, her parents didn't let her. Instead, she was in speech. She had a lot of friends, but moved out of her parents house at 17 to get out. She enlisted in the Navy shortly after she graduated high school, and went to boot camp. She trained for several months before being given a decision, Antarctica or Scotland? Thankfully, she chose Antarctica, because otherwise, I wouldn't exist.She went down there for a four month mission and ended up meeting my father.
Both my mom and my dad have very different views of Antarctica. My dad thought it was beautiful and interesting place while my mother thought it was the closest thing to hell on earth. I've been told stories of gigantic ice caves with clear glass and Scuas, which are large birds with sharp beaks, as a child. After meeting each other, my parents got married in a ceremony in New Zealand, then did it again in the United States.
My dad had never been to the United States before then, and he was 20 at the time. The first restaurant that he visited in the United States shortly after arriving was Denny's, where he order the "Moon Over My Hammy", and that's still he favorite dish at Denny's to this day. After staying in San Diego, California for several years, they had their first child (me!). Two years later, they had Braydon, then Callahan. These are my two full brothers. When I was 5, my mother decided that we needed to move closer to Minnesota, so we settled on Sioux Falls, SD. We were only there for a few years before moving again to Minnesota.
My mom and dad divorced when I was only nine years old. I remember the spot that my mom decided to unceremoniously tell me that she was separated from my dad, and it was the parking lot at Kmart in Thief River Falls. I cried and cried because I knew what that meant, it meant that life wasn't going to be the same again. At least, not the way it used to be. I would still have two loving parents but, now in two separate homes.
While my mom has since married two different guys, my dad remains unmarried (smart, if you ask me). He does have a girlfriend, but I don't want to go too far in depth with that. My mom married a cop three years after divorcing my dad, and had two children with him, Kayden and Jesse. They are the only good thing to come out of that marriage. The cop ended up cheating on her with a dispatcher, which almost sounds like a movie I saw one time. She then married Greg, who she is married to now. Greg is old, lets just say he qualifies for the senior citizen discount at most restaurants. There's 16 year age difference between him and my mom, which is kind of creepy. Greg is temperamental, but mostly mental.
The events that led to where I am now are extraordinary, and most people don't believe. I believe. Because, without them, I wouldn't exist. I can only hope to do as many amazing things as my parents did, but for now, I'm on my way.

Top 5 Places I Want to Visit.
1.) Scotland:
Scotland is the land of bagpipes, kilts, and this disgusting thing they call "Haggis". Being that my family's roots go back to "the old country", (Scotland, if you didn't catch on), I want to visit the castles that my family owned.
Back in the good old days where laws weren't laws and a man could trade his wife for a decent pig, my ancestors ruled. My great great great great great aunty was Mary Stuart, otherwise known as Mary, Queen of Scots. She was beheaded in 1857 by her cousin, Queen Elizabeth the First of England for some reason, probably treason. I've seen pictures of aunty Mary in stiff, uncomfortable dresses and wondered what it would be like if I lived back in that time period. If Mary wasn't by 5x great aunt, but just my aunt? I would be in line for the throne, just very far back in line.
I think Scotland would be beautiful place to visit. My dad says that, from what he can remember, it's countryside is really pretty.
2.) India
I'm a belly dancer, so I would love to visit India and see the dancers there. I would also love the see Dubai and take pictures. I would also love to get henna tattoos from a professional artist. I currently have henna of my rats from world belly dance day and I love it!

Japan is where some of the weirdest things of the world originate. I like K-Pop and it would be so much fun to visit Tokyo. I would love the walk around the busy city at night and let the lights of advertising radiate all around me, just like in Times Square.

I only know about Brazil from what my friend, Matheus, told me and from watching the movie "Rio". I've heard many stories about how beautiful it is from Mat, so I want to visit it someday. It would be fun to visit a country where I actually know someone who can be kind of a tour guide.

Marcie Goes On an Adventure
During my spring break, I decided that I wanted Marcie, my pet hairless rat, to see more people. Until then, she hadn't left the house since the day I picked her up. I packed up all of her stuff and left Fiona, my albino rat, at home alone. I left her with enough food and water to keep her happy until I came back. I put Marcie in her traveling box, wrapped it in a blanket, (remember, Marcie's hairless), and set off for home.
The car ride was scary because of the ice. I made sure to be super careful, not only for me, but for Marcie too. I hate driving on ice, so it took me an hour and a half to get to Thief River Falls. I spent some time with my boyfriend and his daughter before heading even further north to Middle River. Marcie didn't seem like she minded all of the travel at all. She like to sniff around and see what was going on. Most of the trip, she sat contently in her bedding and watched the world go by.
When we made it to my mom's house, my little brothers had a million questions. My favorite question came from my youngest brother, Jesse. We were sitting in my old bedroom watching Marcie lap water from her dish when he asked, "Why is Marcie so wrinkly? Is she an old hamster?". To which I had to explain for the millionth time that Marcie was a rat, and not a hamster. My little brothers asked to pet her, but I'm a little overly protective of her, she's so small and delicate.
After some time at my mom's, I took Marcie with me to my dad's house in Thief River Falls. Our dog, Jackson, sniffed at her cage, wondering what she was. I think he stayed away from her because he was a little scared. It was fun to watch Marcie eat and drink her water and pounce around her cage at my dads. Marcie was interested in the new things that were happening around her. She sat on top of her rock house and observed us. Soon, it was time to go back home.
I repacked all of our things and took off for Grand Forks. It felt good to get out of Grand Forks after several months. I needed to get out for a while. I think it was good for Marcie too, because she's at home all the time. When we got home, Fiona was sleeping in her space house. Her plastic name tag for her cage was nowhere to be found. I found it later on the floor of her cage, chewed up and useless. I figured that it could've been a lot worse. I was glad to be home, and I think Marcie was too. It's nice to get out, but it's also nice to be home.

Desert Lightning
For some reason, my favorite memory is the lightning in the desert. When I was five, my family moved from San Diego, California to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We drove through the desert for several days, and one night we got caught in a thunderstorm. We were driving through a desert wasteland, in almost pitch black darkness, when I heard the thunder. The car shook from the noise, but then the lightning came. I could see it emerge from a cloud and rush to meet the Earth followed by a nearly deafening crack. I was scared, but my mom assured me that it would be okay. It happened several more times. I will never forget how the lightning filled the car with radiant light for only milliseconds before it disappeared forever. Maybe it's my favorite memory because the image was so strong to me back then that it burned into my mind. It was a symbol of mother nature's power over us, the poor and defenseless beings that are just visitors in her world.

Douglas Adams is one of my favorite authors. His books are funny and entertaining. This quote from Adams in one of my all time favorites. I can relate to it because I sometimes think I'm a bit off course in my life. I remember that I wanted to start college in Thief River Falls, but I ended up in Grand Forks. I actually like it here, so I wouldn't change it. I think that we end up where we are for a reason. I may not understand why I am in this time and place, but one day, I'll understand the full extent of my fate.

I sometimes think I'm the world's worst procrastinator. Sometimes I wait until the day an assignment is do to actually do it, (Hence the super late blog entries). I relate to this quote because I'm not very good with deadlines, I tend to put stuff off until the last minute, which ends up stressing me out. I like this quote because it pokes fun at deadlines.

An Old Post
I'd like to share my post from my other blog, ratmomma.blogspot.com, which I wrote in the middle of my spring break:
"Spring Break! Already half way over way too fast. I almost had no time to rest at all.
For spring break I went back home, which is a small town (306 people on the town sign) in rural Minnesota. Going back to see my brothers was so much fun. I missed them more than I could believe. My brothers are growing up so fast, which makes me think of how much it sucks to be the oldest.
Sure, maybe some of you think that being the oldest would be fun; parents give you more freedom and you earn privileges before your younger siblings. Okay, so that part wasn't that bad. I might even be the reason why my brothers will have very early curfews later in high school (my bad).
While some perks come with the job of being an older sibling (well, the oldest sibling), there is a lot of set backs, most of which I didn't realize until I left the nest for the "Forks". In middle school, I wasn't in sports most of the year, which made me the babysitter. When I started high school, my brothers took over as babysitters while I was away for sports and other extra curriculars. I ended up being so busy with school that, as my time in high school became shorter and shorter, I was becoming more and more distant from my family. It wasn't until I moved to Grand Forks that I felt totally separated from my family, because I was so far away.
Going back seemed to have opened an old wound that the busyness of my current life was holding shut. I didn't realize how much I missed my brothers until I went to see them again. It felt strange to see my brothers now, they've grown so much since I've seen them last. It's only been months, but it's seemed like years. I felt so out of place in my own family, it hurt just to be in my old house. I never realized how cold it was in the house until I went back. The heat was barely on, I had to wear two pairs of socks just to walk around. I felt like a visitor instead of a family member.
I broke this morning. I was laying in my old room (which now belongs to my younger brother, Kayden) and listened to the family as they got ready to leave the house for jobs and school. Before they left, my two youngest brothers came in the hugged me goodbye. My youngest brother, Jesse, said "I'll miss you Jana". I have a connection with Jesse. Jesse has an autism spectrum disorder, and I understand him pretty well. He's sometimes hard to understand, but he is one of the smartest kids I have ever met. He's socially deficient, but excels mentally. I broke down after my brothers left me in the room. They're growing up, and I'm a hundred miles away.
Shortly after that, my mom and Greg had a fight over milk. This kind of stuff happened all the time when I lived there, but I wasn't used to it anymore, so I broke down again. My mom came in and asked if I was okay, and I blamed my tears on a panic attack. It was a lie, I broke down because I felt like a stranger. Maybe it'll get better, who knows, maybe it'll never change. I used to belong here and now I'm an alien on the planet I used to thrive on. I don't know where I belong anymore. I hope that, as time goes on, I can find my place in the world, otherwise, I'll wander."

My six quirks.
1. I have really bad road rage. Seriously bad road rage. The kind of road rage where I almost followed a guy one day because he turned right in front of me and caused me to skid on the ice. It's pretty bad.
2. I love bellydancing! I dance at 12 Houses belly dancing studio in Grand Forks. I've been dancing on and off since last September. I think that it's a beautiful art form that helps me to relieve stress and free my mind after bad days. I love the costumes, and the people that I have class with are really nice.
3. I have two pet rats; Fiona and Marcie, both girls. I got Fiona when she was only six weeks old last October, and I got Marcie last week. Fiona is now and fully grown albino adult rat and Marcie and a baby hairless. Most people think that rats are gross because of the bad reputation that rats have. In reality, pet rats are probably one of the cleanest pets to have. So far, I haven't had any problems with my rats besides the occasional scratch or nip (if I scare them on accident.)
5. My biggest pet peeve is when people take my awesome parking spot at the apartment building. I hate nothing more than coming home after a long night at Walmart and having to park far away because some jerk can't read. I vow that, next time this happens, I'm gonna park right behind them, public parking laws be damned.
6. I totally still play mandolin......kind of. I've only been able to pick it up two of three times a week, which makes me sad. I love playing when I can. I've been playing for two years now. It started with an old mandolin I found in my mother's closet, and grew until I was playing "I'm Yours" at my senior prom. As a graduation gift, my parents gave me a blue mandolin and encouraged me to keep playing after high school. It proved much harder than I thought. With the night job and the day school, there's hardly time to rest anymore. But, with Tuesday, Thursday, and weekends free, I should be able to find time. Hopefully I can get back into it soon.

Why I Write...
I like writing. I think it's a fun way to express your ideas and thoughts to other people. But why do I write? I write because I love expressing myself through poetry and short stories. It can be hard to write sometimes, everyone gets writers block from time to time, but I think it's worth it to try.
